Limerick Writers’ Centre Announces Intensive One-Day Creative Writing Workshop Saturday 27th Sept 2025.
Award-winning Galway poet Órfhlaith Foyle to lead poetry and short story workshop at The People’s Museum of Limerick.
The Limerick Writers’ Centre is delighted to announce “An Introduction to Short Story and Poetry,” a comprehensive one-day workshop designed to inspire and guide aspiring writers in two of literature’s most beloved forms.
The intensive workshop will take place at The People’s Museum of Limerick on Pery Square, Sat 27th September 2025, featuring separate morning and afternoon sessions. Poetry will be explored from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, followed by an afternoon dedicated to short story writing from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Leading the workshop is award winning County Galway-based poet and writer Órfhlaith Foyle, whose third collection “Three Houses in Rome” was published by Doire Press in September 2023. Foyle brings extensive experience as a dramatist and radio drama creator, having written and directed “May’s End” and “How I Murdered Lucrezia,” both of which received full BAI funding and premiered on Newstalk Radio.
Workshop Highlights
Morning Poetry Session will introduce participants to diverse poetic forms through the works of Marina Tsvetayeva, Michael Hartnett, Eleanor Hooker, Victoria Kennifick, Robert Lowell, Tove Ditlevsen, James Baldwin, and Fernando Pessoa, among others. Participants will explore fundamental elements including tension, rhythm, imagery, and the concept of “negative space” in poetry.
Afternoon Short Story Session will examine works by literary masters including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Kevin Barry, Elaine Feeney, Mary Lavin, Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, and Clarice Lispector. The session focuses on character development, narrative voice, and the unique economies of short fiction.
“This workshop aims to encourage participants to realize how intrinsic poetry and short stories are to life, and how each form thrives on the truth and imagination of the writer,” explains Foyle. “By the end of the day, each participant will have created their own poetry and begun their own short story.”
About the Instructor
Órfhlaith Foyle has received significant recognition for her literary work, including a full Arts Council Agility Award in 2021 and an Arts Council Literary Bursary in 2022. Her radio dramas, adapted from her short fiction, demonstrate her versatility across multiple literary forms.
