Lunch Time Poetry @ The Hunt Museum

In association with the Hunt Museum 8 poets (2 per week) will give a reading in the Captain’s Room four Fridays in July from 1.00pm to 2.00pm, readings will be preceded by a piece of music performed by local musicians.

The poets taking part:

Steven Bond grew up in Castleconnell, Co. Limerick, and has studied and taught in Limerick for much of his life. He received the College Silver Medal from Mary Immaculate College (2001, English Literature & Philosophy) and went on to complete a PhD in Philosophy on the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein (2005). Academic publications span philosophy and literature – Nietzsche and Wittgenstein, Joyce and Beckett. His research on Joyce’s Ulysses has been described by prominent Joycean scholars as “pivotal to a full understanding of Ulysses” (Declan Kiberd) and “a discovery of considerable significance” (Gerry Dukes). A satirical e-novella entitled Ulysses 2 Murder in Paris (“an eccentric, marvellously creative and bewildering whodunnit” – Jonathan McCreedy) was published in 2013, drawing comparisons with Flann O’Brien and Douglas Adams. He recently launched his first collection of poetry Checkerworks (Revival Press).

Mary Lavery Carrig writes for stage, radio and print publication. Her poetry has been included in Eye Flash, Malpais Review and Still in the Dreaming. She has been guest poet at the Michael Hartnett Poetry Event at Listowel Writer’s Week. She has featured regularly on RTÉ Radio 1 Sunday Miscellany. Her ‘Four Letters’ are included in the Let Us Rise Limerick Soviet Anthology

Kathryn Crowley is a writer of poetry, prose and songs. Nature, social issues, dreams and human behaviour inspire the writing. Her arts practice spans 19 years. Crimson Waves was her last socially-engaged project. It looked at menstruation, taboo and female health over 9 months. To balance her ‘dark’ paintings and poems (motivated by the smear test scandal and the inhumanity of direct provision), Kathryn is now focused on art for arts’ sake. At her yoga studio in Newcastle West she teaches classes and hosts art exhibitions. She also studies sociology and community regeneration at MA level in the Univeristy of Limerick and is editing her first book.

Oran Ryan’s novels include The Death of Finn (2006), Ten Short Novels by Arthur Kruger (2007)and One-Inch Punch (2010). He has written plays for the stage and radio as well as publishing poetry and short stories. He regularly contributes literary criticism to magazines at home and abroad. His latest is a poetry book titled Portrait of an Atheist Monk at Prayer, published by Revival Press in 2019.

Evelyn Casey is from Limerick and has worked as a fitness/health trainer at the Limerick University Arena. She has had worked published in Revival Literary Journal and has been shortlisted for a prize in the Desmond O’Grady International Poetry Competition 2009.
She has been guest reader in The White House in Limerick and O Bheal in Cork . She published her first poetry collection Not My Life Story in 2014. A second collection is due out in 2019.

Martin Vernon was born in England on a farm in Sussex. He moved to Ireland in 1995 and now lives in Ennis, Co. Clare. He has had many jobs ranging from electrician to community theatre actor. He has run drama workshops in schools and with groups of adults with disabilities. He has campaigned all his adult life around social justice issues and is involved in inter-cultural work and a men’s group. His interests include nature, Irish traditional music, singing, and meditation. He is a member of The Poetry Collective and this is his first collection. Several of his poems have been published in the Clare Champion. His first poetry collection The Birth and The Cry (Revival Press) was published in 2016 and is presently being reprinted.

Greg Carey is from Limerick and lives in Shannon Co Clare. Graduated from UCD in English and Philosophy 1980. Left Ireland newly married for the U.S.A where I worked in industry for four years. He also trained as a psychotherapist which he practises part-time. He recently completed a PhD in Philosophy in the University of Wales. He has had work appear in The Stony Thursday Book, Revival and Crannog (where one of his poems was selected by them to be sent for the Forward prize). Online he has appeared in the Creation Centred Spirituality magazine.

Aimee Levey is a psychology and philosophy graduate from NUI, Galway. She has been working for the last decade as a business developer for start-ups in London and Doha, but has recently returned to Ireland. She has written and produced five plays for Galway, Edinburgh, London and Los Angeles: Finally Some Privacy, Harder Please, Natural State, Cryptosporidium Town and De Backan’s. Her plays focus on the darker side of human nature with strong female lead characters. She has completed her first novel in a series: Mug, and her first volume of poetry, which are available for purchase.
