The fee for the 6 weeks is E110.00 payable in advance.
We have called the course ‘Write on the Edge’ because that is where we need to be in our writing. Not writing the sameo-sameo but bringing to our stories real people who can’t be pinned down and infusing our poetry with the “frantic genius” of someone who knows that to write is to make a mark that will live on. Our hope is the course inspires you to do just that and we will do our best to help in any way we can.
Each weekly module will cover an exciting piece of writing. Each module will contain exercises to stimulate your writing impulse. At the end of the course, Limerick Writers Centre have agreed to publish an Anthology of your work.
Our tutor, Ron Carey, will will send out a module and a set of exercises* at the start of each week, followed by a Zoom meeting every Saturday morning at 10 am. This meeting will allow you to contribute to the debate, discuss the writers, their work, and your response. The participants will be encouraged to work on their own writing and send it to Ron for appraisal. All work presented will receive feedback from him. *(These exercises are not a requirement and you can happily spend your time on your own writing.)
Before the course starts, all participants will be invited to a Zoom meeting on Saturday the 10th September at 10am, where Ron will set out the objectives of the course. There is no obligation to attend any or all of the Zoom meetings, but we would recommend involvement to get the most out of the course.

At the end of each week, there will be a Zoom meeting each Saturday morning at 10am for all those who wish to take part.* This will allow participants to give their response to that week’s module. *(You can be part of the course without participation in the Zoom meetings).

The Course
Here are the themes we will be exploring in Write on the Edge –
(Week 1-Module 1) The Short Story.
We will cover three short stories in this course, all famous for very different reasons. First up is The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin. Written in the late 1800s, this story of the accidental death of a husband from a woman’s point of view caused quite an uproar. Let’s find out why.
(Week 2-Module 2) Poetry
This week we look at our poet for this course, W B Yeats, his life, his poems. As well as examining the background of Sailing to Byzantium we will study this great poem in detail.
(Week 3-Module 3) The Short Story
This week we look at James Thurber’s – The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Why is this one of the world’s most popular short stories? A guilty pleasure or something more substantial? We find out and have some laughs along the way.
(Week 4-Module 4) Poetry
Yeats in Colour. This week we look at how Yeats used colour in his poetry. We examine his connection with Maud Gonne and ask the question – was Yeats a Feminist?
(Week 5-Module 5) The Short Story
William Faulkner’s – Dry September. Some critics think this is Faulkner’s best story but it is almost unknown – is this because of its content? With an in-depth analysis of this short story we try to discover why.
(Week 6-Module 6 ) Poetry
Yeats and Immortality. This week we look at some of Yeats’s famous poems and try to uncover what was behind the great poet’s lifelong fascination with old age and death.
Looking forward to seeing you on-line.
